Dear Resident, You would be surprised at the amount of suspected stolen bicycles we recover from suspects and properties during searches where we cannot establish ownership, thus preventing us from proving its stolen and being able to return it to the owner. There are some simple steps that you can take to protect your bicycle and help us return it to you should it be stolen. Register your bike with www.bikeregister.com which you can do for free using your frame number. One of the issues we see is expensive bikes being locked with cheap cable locks – these can often be ripped apart easily using force (using the cycle frame itself for leverage) or cut in a matter of seconds with garden secateurs, bolt croppers, cordless angle grinders, etc. Using two locks at least one of which is a D-lock presents more of a challenge and therefore a deterrent. D-locks are still vulnerable to a bolt cropper attack. Better still would be to consider an armoured product such as a Hiplok, which would take considerable time and effort to cut and is a considerable deterrent. Use a GPS tracking device for your bike; there are lots on the market which can be covertly fitted and increase the chances of your bicycle being recovered if it is stolen. We hope the above information is useful. Kind regards, Dawley & Malinslee Safer Neighbourhood Team
